Monastery of Kappadu (India)

Scholarships for 11 brothers of the community

ree

The monastery of Kappadu was founded under the Syro-Malabar rite by three monks from the Benedictine monastery of Asirvanam (Bangalore).

The community settled in Kappadu in 1987. It has five other smaller houses, considered as houses of formation.

In each house there are two or three monks looking after a group of candidates. This project was launched to facilitate the formation of candidates, who are often very young (the postulancy lasts three years); to strengthen financial viability: since agriculture is the main source of income, small communities with sufficient and well-cultivated land are more likely to be financially self-sufficient; and to spread the Benedictine way of life to other dioceses in Kerala.

The community has fifty-five members, including four novices and seven young temporary professed.

Projects

Eleven brothers are pursuing university studies in canon law, education, social work, theology and philosophy.

Financial assistance would be needed for tuition and travel expenses.

Total financial assistance: €11,440.
